Arthur Padilla
Interim Executive Director
The ROOTS Board of Directors is pleased to announce the hiring of Arthur Padilla as our interim executive director. Arthur is a nationally recognized leader in social justice leadership and collaboration, and he will bring 25 years of experience in the non-profit sector. He has worked with homeless populations and he has devoted himself to a wide variety of youth development programs. He is trained in counseling psychology and has been an anti-oppression trainer. Among his executive management experiences, Arthur was executive director of Rosehedge/Multifaith Works in Seattle, and he was interim CEO at the Samaritan Counseling Center of Albuquerque. He currently has a consultancy practice in program evaluation.

Position Announcement
JOB TITLE: Overnight Shelter Staff
REPORTS TO: ROOTS Program Manager
POSITION SUMMARY:
Responsibilities: ROOTS Young Adult Shelter in the U-District is seeking candidates for the position of Overnight Shelter Staff. Overnight Shelter Staff help ensure the smooth functioning of our overnight program by training and supporting overnight volunteers, as well as assisting the Overnight Counselor with conflict de-escalation and general overnight and morning shelter operations. This position works overnight shifts in our shelter from 8:00pm-8:30am (Saturday morning shifts will go until 9:30am).
Accountability: The Overnight Shelter Staff reports directly to the Program Manager who will conduct regular 1:1 supervision meetings. During the overnight shift the Overnight Shelter Staff reports to the Overnight Counselor.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Monitor the shelter space throughout the night to help ensure the physical and emotional safety of program participants
Assist with guest laundry and signing guests in and out of restrooms
Train and mentor new Overnight Volunteers, in conjunction with the Volunteer Mentor team
Assist Program Managers and Overnight Counselors with rule enforcement and conflict de-escalation
Help oversee shelter clean up, including getting shelter guests out of shelter on time
Help to supervise and enforce program guidelines, hand out supplies, interact and build positive relationships with guests
Delegate tasks to volunteers throughout the overnight shift
Complete intake paperwork with new guests
Check guests belongings into and out of overnight storage at the beginning and end of each shift
Be familiar with shelter policies and practices and written records required by ROOTS and its contracting partners.
Other duties as assigned by the Shelter Director, Program Manager, and Overnight Counselor
REQUIREMENTS
The chosen candidate will attend The Ropes training, Anti-Oppression 101, Conflict Response, and ROOTS volunteer/staff orientation

Must be 18 years old or older.
QUALIFICATIONS
Must demonstrate ability to work effectively in a team-driven, harm reduction oriented, service organization.
Strong conflict de-escalation skills
Ability to consistently uphold and explain ROOTS rules and policies
Must have highly developed communication skills: ability to communicate the written and spoken word clearly and effectively; ability to communicate to a wide variety of people with ease.
Strong understanding of issues related to poverty, oppression, and homelessness
Preference given to candidates with demonstrated skill working with those impacted by homelessness and oppression
Prior supervision experience preferred
This is a part-time hourly position scheduled for a minimum one or two 12 hour shelter shifts per week Work-Study compensation available for eligible candidates. Compensation is $15/hour.

JOB TITLE: Overnight On-Call Staff
REPORTS TO: ROOTS Shelter Director
POSITION SUMMARY: ROOTS Young Adult Shelter in the U-District is seeking staff available for on-call shifts from 8pm to 8:30am. This is a paid position ($15 hour) that includes sleeping on-site. We prefer candidates already working in the youth services field who can respond to same-evening phone calls. These shifts could be any day of the week from 8:00pm – 8:30am.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist with set up and clean up shelter areas, help to supervise and enforce program guidelines, hand out supplies, interact and build positive relationships with guests.
Do an ‘awake shift’ of 1.5 to 4 hours during the night.
Be familiar with shelter policies and practices and written records required by ROOTS and its contracting partners.
Reply to requests of need, even if unable to come in for shift.
Other duties as assigned by the Volunteer Manager and Executive Director.
